WH Smith Notting Hill Gate - 1980
My first job after leaving school was with WH Smith & Son Ltd ('For books and a great deal more'). I spent 6 years with them altogether (Trainee Manager then promoted to the heady heights of Department Manager), ending up spending 6 months at the Notting Hill Gate, London W11 branch 1979/1980 . During my time there I sold typewriter paper to John Cleese. a photograph album to Anthony Wedgewood Benn and something I can't remember to Gabrielle Drake (UFO, Crossroads etc). I don't think my mind was on what I sold her - She was georgeous!!! At that time she was in a TV Series - 'The Kelly Monteith Show'. John Cleese was rather funny. he told me that his secretary had sent him in for some typewriter paper. Other 'celebs' (a loose term for some of them) I saw while working there were Billy Idol, Frank Bough, and Dinah Sheridan (Genevieve). At the end of 6 months I moved on to the rather less hectic Chiltern hills of Buckinghamshire. Taken with my Canon TX SLR.
