Legend

This cocktail is called Legend. It was created by Jillian Vose in 2012 while at Death & Co in New York. There's not much written about this drink or why it's named "Legend". I wanted to highlight it because it recipe shows how you can substitute every ingredient for something different but still have it be similar to its predecessor. This is specifically a variation on the manhattan where whiskey has been replaced by the dynamic duo of rum and cognac (this combo shows up in other cocktails, especially from D&C). The sweet vermouth is substituted for sherry for that vinous dry acidity and Amaro Nonino for its elegant herbal qualities. The whole thing comes together to feel like a manhattan, but taste completely different.

1 oz Cognac (Pierre Ferrand 1840 recommended)

0.5 oz Aged Jamaican Rum (Appleton Estate V/X recommended)

0.75 oz Amontillado Sherry

0.5 oz Amaro Nonino

2 dashes aromatic bitters (Vose uses one of Angostura and one of Bitter Truth)

Combine all of the ingredients into a mixing glass. Add ice and stir until arctic cold. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. No garnish.
