Gustav Mahler
Auguste Rodin, 1909, Plaster.
“Rodin made this bust of the famous composer Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) at the initiative of Alma Mahler’s stepfather, the painter Carl Moll. Rodin had Mahler pose a dozen times beginning in April 1909, and made two versions of the portrait: one in a traditional, realist style, which inspired him to make, in particular, the marble Eighteenth Century Man, or Mozart; and the other, transferred to bronze, whose more animated and vigorous modelling gave the face a highly expressive quality.”
