Wary Dames

A bevy of female Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) train their keen hearing and large eyes in our direction as the afternoon sun slants across the feet of the dunes, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado.

My two boys, my wife, and our dog (on leash) charged down the trail toward the waiting sand, and as I paused to watch them in their single-minded motion, I stopped. These four were noticing me as I finally became cognizant of them. It had been a long day in the car to get here, and the transition to being outside was welcome.
