An Auspicious Beginning
Mid-morning light strikes the slopes of the Almirante Nieto (2670 m) as we begin our first real day of backpacking after camping at the mouth of the Rio Ascencio. The name of the peak translates to "Admiral's Grandson," though I have no idea as to the origin of the name. At this point, I hadn't carried a full 45 lb pack in 8 y or so, and the body was wondering just what the brain thought it was doing. Fortunately, it was not a particularly long day, and there was plenty of time for soaking the feet in mountain streams along the way.
