20040417 - Blacksburg reunion tour - 100-0042 - Oakbridge - tree in front of our apartment - OUR CAT SAMHAIN GOT STUCK HERE - click thru to read the story with notes about specific parts of the tree
tree in front of our college apartment that we lived in for 2 yrs.
Our cat Samhain got stuck here:
As told by my wife Carolyn, with edits:
"One time, Samhain got an abscess on his chest. It started out as a lump. I knew something was up because everytime I picked him up, he'd meow. Then I discovered this lump.
I didn't think *too* much of it, until he got chased up that tree by a barking dog. Long after the dog was gone, I kept opening the door to let him in, and he was still in the tree. I kept thinking he was afraid the dog was still out there somewhere. Eventually, Clint & I decided something was definitely up, because it wasn't like Samhain to hang out in a tree for 5 hours. So I pulled up the suburban under that tree, and Clint was then high enough to reach the lowest branch of the tree. He climbed up onto it, and then up to as high as would support human weight. He still couldn't reach Samhain.
So I passed our orange lightweight plastic sled up to Clint, who then held it out to Samhain, as a receiving tray. Samhain, who was a very smart cat, apparantly knew he was stuck, and knew the purpose of this tray. Under normal circumstances, a cat would run away top speed from such a large, cumbersome object. But Samhain knew this was his rescue and stepped right into the sled. Clint then climbed down and we had successfully retrieved him.
What had happened was that lump had burst when he went up the tree, so he was pretty miserable and wouldn't move to come down. The vet had to shave his nipple and I had to give him antiobiotics and rub ointment on his nipple."
