The Battery est un impressionnant bâtiment neuf de près de 5.000 m² qui abrite le studio de Koen Vanmechelen. Il a été conçu par le célèbre architecte suisse Mario Botta (Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, Fiore di pietra, Suisse…). Botta s’est inspiré du travail artistique de Vanmechelen et a créé un bâtiment presque entièrement en béton avec façades en pierre noire et baies vitrées de 6 mètres qui envoient la lumière jusqu’au plus profond du bâtiment.
La première partie a été posée sur piliers, si bien que le visiteur passe par une sorte de galerie en plein air. Des niches abritent des œuvres en 2D et 3D de Vanmechelen, dont l’installation du Red Jungle Fowl, un coq doré sauvage ancêtre du poulet de ferme. Le reste du studio n’est pas accessible au public car c’est le lieu de travail de l’artiste, son studio ou atelier, avec salles logistiques et bureaux pour son équipe.
The Battery is an impressive new building of nearly 5,000 m² which houses Koen Vanmechelen's studio. It was designed by the famous Swiss architect Mario Botta (Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, Fiore di pietra, Switzerland…). Botta was inspired by the artistic work of Vanmechelen and created a building almost entirely in concrete with black stone facades and 6 meter glass windows that send light to the deepest part of the building.
The first part was placed on pillars, so that the visitor passes through a sort of open-air gallery. Niches house 2D and 3D works by Vanmechelen, including the installation of the Red Jungle Fowl, a wild golden rooster ancestor of the farm chicken. The rest of the studio is not accessible to the public because it is the artist's workplace, his studio or workshop, with logistics rooms and offices for his team.
