Né en 1940 à Lubumbashi, aîné d’une fratrie de 14 enfants, Mode Muntu intègre l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de sa ville à seulement 14 ans. Son langage plastique intuitif l’intègre dans un mouvement d’artistes contemporains, tels que A.R. Penck et Keith Haring, qui utilisent la silhouette comme un moyen d’expression universel.
La peinture instinctive de cet artiste s’est créé un sillon marginal dans les tumultes de l’histoire de la République démocratique du Congo.
Enfant, Michaël De Plaen, un des deux Commissaires de l'exposition, avait pour habitude d’évoluer librement au sein du musée de Lubumbashi dans lequel ses parents étaient employés. Sa rencontre avec un peintre timide, travaillant en solitaire le marqua au point de lui consacrer un ouvrage en 2015 et aujourd’hui, une exposition à La Cité Miroir. Le but ? Amener au grand jour la figure et le travail de Mode Muntu.

Born in 1940 in Lubumbashi, eldest of a sibling of 14 children, Mode Muntu joined the Academy of Fine Arts in his city at only 14 years old. His intuitive plastic language integrates him into a movement of contemporary artists, such as A.R. Penck and Keith Haring, who use the silhouette as a universal medium of expression.
The instinctive painting of this artist created a marginal groove in the tumults of the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As a child, Michaël De Plaen, one of the two curators of the exhibition, used to move freely within the Lubumbashi museum where his parents were employed. His encounter with a shy painter, working alone, marked him to the point of dedicating a work to him in 2015 and today, an exhibition at La Cité Miroir. The goal ? Bring the figure and work of Mode Muntu to the open.
