mind your garbage, please

The occasional plastic bottle provides a great improvised toy, and I'm so proud to see Blanca picking them up to keep Oregon's beaches beautiful! My car is always full of bottles, played with or not, that we found on the beach.

Yesterday, we stumbled onto a plastic bonanza! There were plastic bottles everywhere! I stuffed them in every pocket and carried a huge armful of plastic garbage to the car (several miles!). Today we went back and I carried out another 4 big bags' worth! This is a particularly pristine lonesome beach and I was pretty shocked. I think this was all a batch of garbage that may have come from a specific source, like a passing ship. The people at the Gold Beach Visitor Center who hand out bags for beach cleanup say it's common for ships to throw garbage overboard.

Well, for those ship tossers, or anyone else, I have news for you: Your garbage doesn't go away. It washes up and becomes somebody else's problem! Not to mention the dangers it poses to wildlife.
