SL: One Billion Rising Campaign - Break The Pattern

Domestic violence has been predominantly portrayed in the popular media, news, and entertainment industries, as physical violence by men against women. The scars of physical abuse tend to heal and serve as reminders to us not to let those things happen again, not to let the offense go unrecognized, not to let the perpetrator off the hook without consequences. But in reality, this is only the proverbial low-hanging fruit, the sort of thing that is easy to understand and identify. Yes, it happens that way a lot of the time, but there is a more insidious and harder to identify kind of domestic abuse. It is mental and emotional abuse and it follows no particular set of rules about gender or relationships. It is a pattern that is insidious and in some relationships consistent and pervasive. It is as unfair and demeaning as anything. The abuser is a master manipulator, expert in all the tactics from bullying to gas-lighting to emotional blackmail. It is even worse when the victim is a juvenile and the abuser an adult. This is the quiet, invisible abuse that all too frequently no one notices. Even the victims often rationalize it away, as if they might deserve it. They don’t of course. No one deserves someone else in their life who is that hateful, selfish, controlling, and manipulative. The first step is for the victim to wake up and realize that no one deserves such treatment, then get the courage to find someone trustworthy to listen. If this is you, get out now, cut all ties, and never go back. Old habits are too hard to break. Established patterns are too easy to fall back into again.
