Domestic violence has been predominantly portrayed in the popular media, news, and entertainment industries, as physical violence by men against women. The scars of physical abuse tend to heal and serve as reminders to us not to let those things happen again, not to let the offense go unrecognized, not to let the perpetrator off the hook without consequences. It is even worse when the victim is a juvenile and the abuser an adult. This is the quiet, invisible abuse that all too frequently no one notices. Even the victims often rationalize it away, as if they might deserve it. They don’t of course. No one deserves someone else in their life who is that hateful, selfish, controlling, and manipulative. The first step is for the victim to wake up and realize that no one deserves such treatment, then get the courage to find someone trustworthy to listen.
