Chris Laforet says: Birds are everywhere, their ubiquity is even taken for granted. What if there were suddenly no birds. Their presence would be missed by the lack of bird song and chattering. They would be missed by the sound of their beating wings. They would be missed by the lifelessness of the surrounding scenery. As much as we may "tune them out," birds contribute a sense of (maybe cliché) location to all locales. What would a lighthouse be like without gulls?

Chris Laforet says: "Splish splash, I was taking a bath Long about a Saturday night A rub dub, just relaxing in the tub Thinking everything was alright." (With apologies to Bobby Darin) This fellow is just having a wonderful old time splashing and getting cleaned up.

Chris Laforet says: The semi-transparency of this bird's feathers make for a great effect. It is truly a wonderful capture with really great timing.

Chris Laforet says: Another excellent capture as this gull passes by and pays attention to the photographer. Man and gull locked eyes on each other and for a moment of time their worlds were intertwined.

Chris Laforet says: Hummingbirds are incredible animals. Their metabolism is incredible to sustain the rate of up to 90 beats per second. Their heartrate can easily top over 1000 bpm and yet they do not stroke out ! They are able to hover in midair and can even fly backwards.

Chris Laforet says: Birds epitomize grace and poise. They can gently alight on small branches and lift off in a few flaps of their wings. They are designed so aerodynamically with simple and effective lines that thrill man's soul!

Chris Laforet says: Here is an incredible photo of a pelican diving into water to capture a fish. The image is fascinating as the moment it strikes the water's surface is frozen for us to examine. Interestingly the neck appears to be coiled like a spring to absorb the force of the impact while everything else is streamlined to glide into the water.

Chris Laforet says: Birds lend a sense of humor to many a situation. As their lives intertwine ours, we certainly are enriched by sharing in their space and time. These geese on ice lend a sense of scale and the forced comparison with the man in the picture gives a reason to smile!

Chris Laforet says: One of nature's enigmas is the venerable flamingo. With their beautiful coral-pink coloration, they are gorgeous to behold. Yet, other aspects of their makeup surely cause us pause. Their snakelike neck, inverted beak, and their strange legs are puzzling. Yet, with all of this being said, they also are ranked among the long-distance marathoners of the avian class. They have been known to travel over 350 miles overnight at a rate of approximately 35 mph!

Chris Laforet says: Nesting is the innate sense of building a home to raise a family. Many bird species begin the courtship by building a nest or bringing nest-building materials to a potential mate. It is a fundamental part of a bird's life cycle and we humans resonate with the same urge to have a place to call home.
