Hurricane IIB AP897 1942
One of several photos of my Grandfather’s WWII service. He is standing on the wing, and was an aircraft fitter with 261 Sqn during the war.
261 squadron moved from the Middle-East to the Far-East theatre in early 1942 re-equipping with the Hurricane IIB (from the earlier Mk1). The unit initially arrived in Ceylon and later joined the Burma campaign.
This particular Hurricane is Mk.IIB AP897 and I must thank Rob Walker who contacted me and believes the location to be Dum Dum, India probably in 1942 since his Grandfather who was also with 261 squadron had a photograph of the same Aircraft which he had labelled.
This aircraft was hit by flak and crashed into the sea on 27th June 1943 whist providing top cover to a force of 45 Sqn Vultee Vengeance dive bombers attacking Akyab in Burma. The pilot, Flying Officer Colin Fallon, RAAF was on his first operation and sadly was lost.
