Shepard Fairey's Mural of The Peace Goddess

This mural by Shepard Fairey is at 238 1st Avenue, Pittsburgh.

(My photo, but not my art work.) I'm not sure of the size of this mural, but I would guess it's about 12 feet W and about 10 feet H.

You might not recognize the artist's name, but you would probably recognize the Obama/HOPE poster he designed for the 2008 election. (www.allposters.com/-sp/Barack-Obama-Hope-Posters_i8075457...)

The following information can be found at a website created and maintained by a group of local bicyclists who take photos when riding on city streets and adding new images of public art as they are found.

In 2009, Shepard Fairey had an exhibit at the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Side. Known for being a street artist, he posted artwork around the city prior to the opening of the show. This was one of them. These wheat-paste pieces were never meant to last forever and many of them are in very poor condition now [although this one has held up relatively well, so far.]

In October 2009, Mary Thomas (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) wrote about the art show and the artist explaining some of these images and influences. (www.post-gazette.com/art-architecture/2009/10/26/Fairey-s...)

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust also puts out a book of "Pittsburgh Art in Public Places" which residents or visitors can obtain free and use for their own self-directed walking tours in the city. The 3rd edition (2013) and the 4th (2016) do not include this mural, probably because it was never meant to be a permanent display.

However, the pghmurals website (link above) has a much more comprehensive list, including info on this mural.
