Black Woodpecker

a brief sighting of a male bird in a forest 2 days ago

 

This is by far Europe's largest woodpecker species. it lives in old forests where a pair occupies a large territory.

It is a relative of 2 well-known species of the Americas, the Pileated Woodpecker and the Lineated Woodpecker
