Mandarin Ducks

on a stormy day 2 weeks ago at a large pool in farmland the visit of a pair of Mandarin Ducks for a few minutes was an unexpected sighting.

This fairly small duck was introduced in Europe from the Far East quite a long time ago. There are small populations of escaped or deliberately released birds that survive in the wild in several countries.

Here in Flanders ( the North of Belgium ) less than 100 breeding pairs probably.

A fairly shy duck that nests high up in trees.
