Homemade Headstone

This is the whold view of what's left of a child's headstone in the Washington Cemetary in Washington Court House, Ohio. My husband told me the story as he was told as a boy. It was a child's grave. During the depression, there was no money for purchased headstones, so the family made a stone from concrete. They poured the concrete and added marbles....I'm not sure if the child played with marbles or the family just thought they were something a child would enjoy. What remains here is just the very bottom portion of the headstone, but four marbles still remain. The original stone had a window like some of the other pictured here, full of toys and mementos of the child. We don't know if the stone disintegrated over the years, or if vandals were involved. I just found this stark testimony very moving. After all these years, these marbles still peek out, giving a touch of color to an otherwise drab scene.
