Women’s group leader Kalpon addresses men and women in the community.
Local NGO Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Services works through farmer federation groups. In this community, belonging to marginalised ethnic minority, there are separate women and men’s groups.
Through these groups, members receive training on agriculture, or can operate saving cooperatives to invest in new innovations.
“We began home gardening through the group, and now we want to begin on a larger scale,” said Kalpon. They hope to buy their own seeding machine with saved income.
Group secretary Shotna (second from left), adds: “Before we women only cooked, but now we are learning a lot about agriculture, early marriage and healthcare.”
The community has already seen a decline in early marriage, while the group, most of whom do not own land, are also discussing the wage disparity for agricultural work.
