Great Gallery - Royal Palace of Venaria

Royal Palace of Venaria, Turin - Italy

The Great Gallery

The Gallery, 15 m. in height, 11 m. in width and 73 m. in length, has a rich stucco decoration covering the vault and the walls. This space, originally by Michelangiolo Garove, was then redesigned by Filippo Juvarra, starting in 1716.

The decoration was executed in two phases: the first by Pietro Filippo Somasso (1718-1719) and the second by Giuseppe Bolina (1768-1772).

The scenes are celebrations of the reign of Carlo Emanuele III and of his State. The floor was laid in 1995 according to a model of Juvarra's design, as the original of 1720-1721 was taken to Turin during the French occupation and then reused in the Beaumont Gallery of the Royal Armoury.
