Chuck & Alice Riecks
Virginia: Saltville: Salt Evaporation House
Not all slaves in the South worked on Plantations however. Some worked in various industrial enterprises. They were often found working in the dangerous demanding jobs that no one else wanted. Generally, there were two types of slaves that worked in these enterprises: those owned by the enterprise itself, these were normally the skilled workers; and those who were hired from some nearby master. These latter were the ones who would have the very nasty jobs that no one wanted, such as tending the fires in this Evaporation House where the water was boiled out of the brine to leave the salt.
