Crossing the Road 2
CROSSING THE ROAD
The framed print in the background dates from the late 1930's. It is number 16 in a series used in primary schools of the period. This one was issued to promote road safety with children.
The crossing is clearly identified with Belisha beacons. These were flashing amber globes on black and white posts on each side of the road. They were introduced in 1934 by the then Minister of Transport, Leslie Hore-Belisha.
Notice that this picture does not have a zebra crossing. These were first introduced in 1949 to 1000 selected sites in Britain but in alternating blue and yellow stripes. In October 1951 the now familiar black and white zebra stripes were added to the Belisha crossing. The term Belisha has fallen out of use and replaced by Zebra when used for this type of crossing.
The die-cast metal toy car is from the early 1950's and was made by Timpo. This is fairly good replica of a Lea-Francis 14HP 1.8 litre Four-Light saloon which was manufactured from 1946 to 1950.
