'A Peaceful River' Australia, Kakadu National Park, Jim Jim River

Below is an excerpt from my travel blog. Cheers.

This shot became the heart of an interesting debate/talk at dinner while I was spending the night in Cooinda, in Kakadu National Park. The small town of Cooinda is one of the few lodging areas in the park. I was at the only restaurant in the town having a cold beer and doing some post production when a group of people took notice of my photo and started asking questions about it. After explaining HDR photography to the group, one gentleman inquired about the halo effect you can see at the bottom right hand corner of the sun. I assumed it was just a lens flare but it turns out he was a retired meteorologist and had another theory. He explained to me that the sun had a natural halo around it on that particular evening. Apparently a halo is caused by light passing through ice crystals at high-level stratosphere clouds. These clouds do not produce rain but often precede a low pressure system which usually brings bad weather. It turns out it rained heavily that night and the meteorologist won a bet with his friend. I don't know if his theory is always true in halos that turn up in photographs, but I don't doubt his knowledge of meteorology and it would explain this particular weather lore that I've heard before.

I took this shot from the bridge of the Jim Jim River just before sunset. There was no wind, the water was calm and this oasis in the Outback was surprisingly quiet for a short while making for a nice end -of -the- day shot.

I'm traveling the world right now. I'm currently in Australia, in Darwin checking out the outback. If you'd like to tag along with me pleas check out my HDR travel blog at www.LostManProject.com as I will try and post photos daily of my experiences.
