Through the eye of a needle
Sedge Warbler - Acrocephalus schoenobaenus
Newcastle Great Park is mitigation land between the A1 through Newcastle upon Tyne and a massive housing development. Nature has moved in but the volume of dog walkers and people exercising it can be hard to find. Species that are often showy elsewhere are skulkers here.
The summer migrants have started arriving, just ones and twos so far and I could hear the Sedge Warbler chuntering away in the brambles and occasionally saw movement low down.
Normally at the peak of their song they often emerge out the top of the cover for the crescendo, this one was having none of it. There was just a single small gap through the bush that he never quite appeared in. I had to be patient but eventually on the second visit of the day he briefly stopped and fortunately turned so his head was visible too.
All the way from Africa to hide in a bush for a couple of months !
