Genetic Mutation
Tulips were originally brought to Europe from the Ottoman Empire (Turkey).
Tulip mutations, especially color variations, have been a significant part of tulip history and cultivation, particularly during the "tulip mania" period in the 17th-century Netherlands. These mutations, often caused by viruses like the tulip breaking virus, led to the creation of new and prized tulip varieties with unique color patterns.
Tulips showing desirable colour or petal shape variations (such as the one in the front) would be selectively bred.
At one point in the hight of the mania certain tulip bulbs were worth their weight in gold.
