Passerini's Tanager (Red-rumped Tanager)
Probably found this the hardest bird from Costa Rica to get a feather detail photo of. The black plumage is like crushed velvet and absorbs all light - quite frustrating! This is the only shot of hundred's where you can see a bit of detail. In flight the red flash of the rump feathers is amazing - especially when the rest of the bird is almost invisible in the darkness of the rainforest canopy.
This shot was taken on the Carribean side of CR, the bird is called the Cherrie's Tanager on the Pacific side, but only the females show slight differences.
