BNSF 1659 Colorado Springs 30 Dec 19
The southbound Pikes Peak Local passes through downtown Colorado Springs, CO behind a pair of Cascade Green SD40-2s.
Colorado Springs has given itself the moniker "Olympic City USA" in order to promote its involvement in the training of Team USA and to drum up tourism. Over my right shoulder is the final stages of the new United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum. That's great and all except the Museum is the meat in a homeless and meth sandwich. I'm not sure why the city chose this location since a massive homeless population congregates on either side of it. I'm always leery whenever I'm on this overpass to get a shot. On this trip, there was a woman walking west toward me and I sized her up and thought, "Oh, she looks normal," but then she started to have a screaming argument with herself as she passed by me, most likely fueled by meth. Olympic City USA, indeed! At least the PPL and the old DRGW Depot look good (and I didn't have to Photoshop out any meth partakers from the shot).
One last thing to point out in this shot is the lack of any snow. My previous uploads of this train were made on the same day and they illustrate how much snow was on the ground north of the city. The lack of snow down here is what happens when a storm blows in with winds out of the north and there's a downsloping effect off the Palmer Divide that dries the air out and kills the snow...
