BNSF 1966 Palmer Lake 30 Dec 16
BNSF 1966 is underway again as it pulls north along the icy shores of Palmer Lake in the town of the same name.
This train had completely caught me flat-footed when it popped into view on the south side of town, so I was in a race to see if I could get to a spot along County Line Rd to get a shot before it raced out into the Greenland Open Space. As I was driving the (painfully) slow 30mph through town, I was looking ahead at the grade crossing to see if I had a chance to beat the gates which I didn't think I did. As I got closer and closer, the gates remained standing straight up. As I made the turn onto County Line Rd, I looked over my right shoulder and saw the PPL had inexplicable stopped shy of the signals. I made a hard right turn into the park area on the east side of the lake and spotted a crew member walking back toward the cab from the longhood. As I screeched to a halt and jumped out, the old SD40-2 was throttling up and starting to roll away...but not before I was able to snag this shot and the next one!
I have no clue why it stopped, but it worked out quite well for me!
