ARR 1069 JBER 15 Jul 14

A caboose on a unit train...in 2014?!? Yep, and it's an awesome sight to see...it takes me back to when I was a kid and the caboose was a given on every train.

The AS&G gravel train that operates on the Palmer Branch has added the caboose for the reverse move it makes up the branch. The AS&G trains run with two MACs up front; the QAP gravel train, on the other hand, tends to run MACs 1x1. Why the AS&G train doesn't run 1x1, I don't know. Regardless, I prefer 2 locomotives up front, it just looks better...1x1 is too Canadian Pacific!

This caboose is an old head and was built in 1948 by Pacific Car and Foundry Co. As far as I could tell researching ARR cabeese, I believe this caboose is unique in that it's the only one in the Bold Alaska paint scheme to ever sport the two-tone ARR logo. Not sure why it's the only one, but it's a neat little spotting feature and detail for you modelers out there.

Lastly, I do find it a little ironic that this caboose is forced to sport a FRED!
