Mick # 46 in my 100 strangers series
My first question of Mick was to ask how come he looked so tanned compared to Pete. The answer was that he has a place in Spain where he and his wife go as often as they can. We read so much about keeping out of the sun and how much it ages you. Well that's no true of Mick ........ he told me he's 72 years old.
Mick and Pete (# 45) have been friends for at least 25 years. Mick was a caretaker in a school and they met because Pete is a driver for disabled children. They've been bikers together ever since.
Mick started to tell me about their up and coming holiday to Route 66. Then he backtracked to tell me about the first time they went there in 2010. They were due to come back about the time many European airlines had suspended flights because it was feared the volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland could get into the plane engines. Sadly, the airline returned them to the hotel where they had to stay for another week all expenses paid!
I had to ask about Route 66 and the pair of them explained that they'd only travelled half the Route in 2010 but this year they were doing all 2,448 miles of it. (Do correct me if I'm wrong) Route 66 is known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, which is what Pete and Mick called it. Mick suggested I read the 1939 book 'The Grapes of Wrath' which is about a family from Oklahoma who set out along Route 66 with thousands of others to find jobs, land, dignity and a future.
Thank you so much for agreeing to be one of my 100 strangers Mick. I enjoyed learning all about Route 66 and I'll certainly find the book.
