Aberystwyth University's experimental Mars Rover

This experimental prototype is for investigating the problems of movement and visual navigation on the surface of Mars. It therefore operates in a special sandpit filled with sand which has been carefully devised to mimic the typical sands of mars, and is surrounded by pictorial panels taken from 360 degree Martian horizon scan by NASA. So if it doesn't look up and see the electric lights it looks like Mars :-)

It's a sensor and locomotion actuator development test bed. It's not a self-contained autonomous robot. It's power supplies and computer are remote and sessile, at the end of its umbilical cord.

This photograph was taken during the TAROS 2007 robot conference at Aberystwyth University. The project leader is Dr Dave Barnes, Reader in Planetary and Space Robotics at Aberystwyth. Aberystwyth University's Intelligent Robotics Group is one of the largest in the UK.
