Kiliyanur- Agastyesvara Temple- Vizhupuram District.

 

A village Thirukiliyanvur (Kiliyanur at present) located about 25kms from pondicherry on the pondicherry to Tindivanam route.

The west facing dvitala vimana with Padmabandha adhisthana over the upapitham (Which is buried) , brahmakanta pilasters , unadorned vedi. The devakostha figures are Bhikshatana and dakshinamurty in south , Brahma and Durga in the north , Subrahmanya in the east .Among the devakostha figures of Skanda (east) (locally identified as Vishnu) and Brahma (North) are original. Bhutagana friezes on bumidesa and Vyala friezes above the kabotham.There are salas and kutas in second tala . It has square sikhara. Structures above the first tala are all burried in modern plaster.

The inscriptions on its walls mentioned the temple as Tiru-agnisvaram Udaiyar. An inscription of 10th year Parakesarivarman attributed to “Parantaka I” which is an earliest inscription of this temple would thus be dated to 9th C.E. Other inscription of this temple are 3rd and 13th year of Rajendra chola, 3rd year of Kulotunga chola ,10th year of vikramchola , 28th and 29th year of Rajadirajan.
