Aerial View (3) of the Deer Isle - Sedgwick Bridge

(Flight 2 of 3) Looking east/southeast over the bridge across Eggemoggin Reach. Deer Isle is on the right.

According to the Historic American Engineering Record record at the Library of Congress, the center span is 1080' long and the total length is about 2438' - not quite half a mile. At the middle, traffic is about 100' above the water -- see the HAER page at

for details. According to the page at

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_suspension_bridge_s...

the Deer Isle -Sedgwick Bridge ranks as the 94th longest suspension bridge in the world, and is (by my quick, unofficial count down the list) about the 30th longest in the USA.

The bridge was being painted when we flew over it last fall, and the the primary cables over the main span were wrapped in something (protective?) that makes them look unnaturally thick.
