Hummer 3622

Hummingbird in hover mode at a distance from the camera of 4ft.

An on-camera ringlight flash remotely triggered a Vivitar 283 two ft. from the bird and slightly to the left and below the camera line of sight.

283 flash equipped with 28mm diffuser, so the light and duration were both spread a bit.

Shutter speed is 1/180th second. Lens is 70-220mm Soligor ED macro zoom at 220mm and minimum-focus-distance macro setting.

Shot at 4 mpixel setting (for faster download), then cropped.

That simulated flower is about 1.25" in diameter, to give you a sense of scale ...

I've been waffling on identity between ruby-throated and black-chinned. This image shows the 10th primary feather to be rounded at the tip, so it may be a black-chinned (female). Anyone know for sure?
