balrog-20060430

This solar astrophotograph reminds me of the Balrog from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth trilogy (can't remember which volume). You can see him glaring at you with his fiery eyes, brandishing his glowing whip in his right arm, with his dragon's tail curving off to the other side. This is Active Region 875 in h-alpha, via 3RF's SolarMax 90 scope, a 2.5X Televue Powermate and a DMK 21F04 firewirecam. It is far superior to the ToUCam for h-alpha work. This is about 310 frames from the sixth AVI file (1500 frames) I made with the camera. It is a monochrome capture, but then again so is h-alpha(!). This is much better than yesterday's. MOUSEOVER=flare notes. UPDATE!--This shot made the Spaceweather.com Photo of the Day for May 1, 2006!
