Mare Nectaris

An Autostitch mosaic of 15 images was required to cover this territory on the Moon. Mare Nectaris is the dark, round "sea" at upper center, about 212 miles in diameter. The large crater at left, with its 3/4-mile-high central peaks is 62-mile-diameter Theophilus (about 2.25 miles deep). The crater at bottom center along the edge of Nectaris is the "ruined crater" Fracastorius, which has been filled with Nectarian lava. The arcuate ridge across the bottom of this frame is Rupes Altai, a 3,000-ft-high escarpment about 291 miles long. It is the remains of the outer "ring" thrown up by the Nectaris impact. The bright ray crossing from lower left to upper center is from Tycho, 1,250 miles away. This image is at 3,000mm FL. Each of the 120-frame AVI files used as the source for this mosaic was processed using 6 alignment points in Registax 3. Try the Original size view.
