Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic

While cleaning closets today I ran across this photo from 1936. It's my mom's first grade class at St. Mary's Elementary School in East Hartford, CT. My mom, Dolores Krauskas, loved school, took it very seriously and was a great student. She ended up graduating as the Valedictorian in high school.

she used to sing this song to me when I was little...

School days, school days,

Dear old golden rule days.

'Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic,

Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick.

You were my queen in calico,

I was your bashful barefoot beau,

And you wrote on my slate,

'I love you, Joe,'

When we were a couple of kids.
