Frederick B. Carter House (1909-10)
NRHP #74000758
1024 Judson Avenue
Evanston, IL
One of the many buildings in Evanston that is listed on the National Register.
Walter Burley Griffin designed this home for the close friend of his sister. Griffin, an admirer of Louis Sullivan's architectural philosophy, was first an employee for Dwight Perkins, who shared office space with Frank Lloyd Wright in Steinway Hall. In 1901 Wright hired Griffin at his studio in Oak Park where Griffin stayed until 1905. He left because the two architects got into an argument. Wright should have made Griffin his partner, but when Wright returned from a trip to Japan, he paid Griffin in Japanese art prints, which in turn ended their relationship. During the early part of the 20th century, Griffin created more than 130 designs in his office in Chicago. He spent the rest of his life in Australia after he won the competition to design the new capital city of Canberra.
