MacArthur Elementary School in Broome County, New York

MacArthur Elementary School is seen in Binghamton, N.Y., on Oct. 8, 2020. After remnants of Tropical Storm Lee inundated the school with over three feet of water from the nearby Susquehanna River, the school was rebuilt with numerous measures to improve its resilience to flooding. The lower level of the school, sitting in the river's flood plain, was converted to a playground that can flood without lasting damage, while rain gardens and other structures to soak up and filter stormwater are scattered throughout the campus.
