*FORCED MARRIAGES AND DISHONOUR VIOLENCE – NEW 24-HOUR HELPLINE LAUNCHED IN
NEW BOOK AIMED AT TEENAGERS*
Journalists are invited to the launch of a new book by Aneeta Prem
(pictured) about forced marriage in the UK on Wednesday 29 June in the
Houses of Parliament. The book launch coincides with the launch by Freedom
Charity of the first ever professional 24-hour helpline for child victims of
Forced Marriage and Dishonour Violence.
The book is entitled 'But It's Not Fair', and deals with the issue of forced
marriage and dishonour violence towards children and teenagers, aiming to
raise awareness of the Freedom Charity (www.freedomcharity.org.uk) and the
new helpline. The early summer is the worst time of year for children being
taken abroad and forced into marriage. Freedom Charity’s 24/7 hotline, the
first of its kind in the country, aims to provide a source of advice and
assistance for children facing up to these problems. The helpline number
will be 0845 607 0133 and will be widely publicised in schools and community
centres across the country as well as being available on the Freedom Charity
website.
The launch event will be held on Wednesday 29 June from 10am in Committee
Room Two in the House of Lords in conjunction with the Kids Task Force..
Hosted by Lord Harris of Haringey, chair of trustees of Freedom Charity, the
event will feature the Rt. Hon. Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the Home Affairs
Select Committee, and Eleanor Laing MP, who has tabled Early Day Motion 586
on forced marriages.
The author of the book, Aneeta Prem, is a magistrate working in Stratford in
the London Borough of Newham. She has extensive experience supporting child
victims of forced marriage and dishonour based crimes through her work with
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, government ministers, the MPA and the
police.
Aneeta will be available for interview before, during, and after this event
and the press are welcome to attend.
*If you would like to attend the launch on June 28 or the photo-opportunity
on June 29, or arrange interviews either before or after the launch, please
