Project 52 - Entrepreneur of the Year
Reinventing her future, Melissa figured out a strategy to help meet the challenges of her growing family and a weak economy. A certified teacher, she chose to stay home with her kids, follow her enthusiasm and rake in the money along with the palm fronds. While her husband grows elegant palms for the home and garden, Melissa harvests the fronds, selling to artists, crafters, florists, salons and costumers. After noting the huge amount of palm tree ‘waste’, she started researching the various uses and thought she might have stumbled upon the perfect way to capitalize on the assets at hand; not to mention the government stimulus packages available to Green recyclables and new businesses.
Melissa is excited to see the growth (pun intended) of her business. She says, “The secret is to set big, but doable, goals. That way, once you’ve succeeded, you can blow raspberries at every nay-sayer who doubted you!”
