"The torrents smoothness ere it dash below;"

Douglas Falls

North Fork Blackwater River

Blackwater Canyon Trail

Monongahela National Forest

The title quote was taken from the book "The Blackwater Chronicle" written by Philip Pendleton Kennedy published in 1853.

The description on the title page states that this book is a Narrative of an Expedition into The Land of Canaan. A country flowing with wild animals, such as panthers, bears, wolves, elk, deer, otter, badger, with innumerable trout - by five adventurous gentlemen, without any aid of government, and solely by their own resources, in the summer of 1851.

The chapter I pulled the title quote from is titled The Falls of the Blackwater. When they first discovered Douglas Falls, they thought they had discovered the large falls on the Blackwater River and the namesake of Blackwater Falls State Park.

This book is a first person account of adventure in what was then an unspoiled and vast American wilderness. You can find this book at wvupressonline.com/kennedy_blackwater_chronicle_978093705...
