The best of two worlds

The EX-GTW triple expansion steam powered car ferry "City of Milwaukee" is shown at Kewaunee, WI being loaded by a three unit set of Green Bay and Western ALCO's in from Green Bay. If you look closely, you can make out the big "GT" herald on the bow of this beautiful vessel.

The City of Milwaukee was built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co at Manitowoc, WI in 1931 and served the Grand Trunk until its car ferry operation was abandoned in 1978. She then went on lease to the Ann Arbor railroad as a second vessel to augment the MV Viking. The City of Milwaukee survives at Manistee, MI as a ship museum and is designated a National Historic Landmark.

The Milwaukee is the last surviving example of a traditional "classic era" Great Lakes car ferry. She served as an active vessel from 1931-1982.

In my opinion, this is the best of both worlds that could be seen in 1979; a steam powered vessel being loaded by three well cared for Alco's was pretty hard to beat. I think I was pretty sore from all the times I pinched myself as I shot my photos that day. KR64 slide scan. September 1979.
