Jack Kranenburg in a 1931 Citroën C6 roadster, Shanghai ca. 1937

Charles Gesner van der Voort's (1916-1991) friend Dorone van den Brandeler worked for Java-China-Japan Line in Shanghai. They shared a 'mess' with other bachelors. During WW2 Dorone van den Brandeler served in Princess Irene Brigade, Corps Insulinde and NEFIS III. After the war he met his wife Jacqueline, whom I met and who shared many stories of the Shanghai and WW2 years and his Shanghai photo album.

This photo shows Jack Kranenburg in a luxury automobile. Because of joining housing, the bachelors could afford things which people back at home in the Netherlands could only dream of. From an internet search, I learned that Jack Kranenburg joined 1st regiment Husars in Amersfoort. As they were both born in 1914 and served the Husar regiment in Amersfoort, I assume that Dorone van den Brandeler and Jack Kranenburg knew each-other before arriving in Shanghai. Jack had finished a study for interpreter/ translator Japanese, worked at Java-China-Japan Line in Kobe and Shanghai and translated at the March 1942 surrendering negotiations of the Netherlands East Indies. He died in November 1943 during Japanese imprisonment.
