Limewood mummy portrait of a woman

Limewood portrait of a woman, separated from its mummy. The richly bejeweled woman in the panel portrait is portrayed with elegance and sophistication, with sweet, refined features. Her necklace is inset with precious stones and she wears a gold wreath on her head, seen in many funerary portraits. All of the jewelry detail has been accentuated gold leaf, along with the thin borders of the yellow stripe of her tunic.

The panel has curved, but whether this happened after excavation or before isn't noted. The BM's website has a digitally flattened out photo: www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/Y_EA65346.

ca. 160-170 CE. Found at Kom el-Kharaba el-Kebir, Faiyum, Egypt.
