Fresco medallion with portraits of a man and a woman
Fragment of a fresco medallion with portraits of a man and a woman from a diaeta of the Villa Arianna in ancient Stabiae (modern Stabia). A diaeta was an apartment used for dining in, and for the other purposes of life, smaller than a triclinium, more personal and not for guests, perhaps.
This was one of six ancient Roman frescoes that had been looted and recently recovered; this one and two others were from a site in Stabiae, stolen from a buried villa in the 1970s and smuggled out of Italy and trafficked abroad.
Roman, 1st century CE, Villa Arianna, dieta, Stabiae.
