Fresco fragment depicting a woman (maenad?) with a leopard
A framed scene against a black wall of a woman - probably a maenad, a female follower of Dionysus-Bacchus - offering a silver kantharos (double-handled wine cup) to a leopard. Dionysus is frequently depicted pouring wine from a kantharos into the mouth of a panther, leopard, or other big cat.
The frame consists of a double border, the inner one suggesting a rope. The scene is on a red ground and shows a reclining, draped woman leaning on her left hand while with her right she offers a silver kantharos to a seated leopard. The ground shades from brown to yellow and there is a two-branched tree to the left.
