Rust-resistant wheat makes a happy breeder
Sridhar Bhavani, CIMMYT wheat pathologist breeder
and coordinator of the Durable
Rust Resistance in Wheat project in eastern Africa, is
a happy wheat breeder. On
his left is a wheat variety
highly resistant to Ug99, a
stem rust threatening wheat production throughout the
world. The variety completely
resisted infestation by the
variety on his right, which was
deliberately inoculated with
the fungal pathogen at the Kenya
Agricultural Research Institute,
Njoro, Nakuru County, Kenya.
