Beauty and the Beast

I've heard it said that we wouldn't really appreciate beauty were it not for ugliness. If that statement is true, then this shot is a perfect juxtaposition of both elements.

This is another stretch of Flagler Beach, where the "fence" they put up to warn people about the drop off from the road is really pretty ugly, and hopefully temporary. I suppose that will depend upon what kind of hurricane season we have this year.

Hwy A-1-A in Flagler Beach, along with Flagler's pier, has been notorious for collapsing down the dunes when the hurricanes hit! The water washes it out. When you hear about "storm surge", think of this image. This was pretty much high tide, and you can see how much distance the shoreline is from the road. Now, imagine the water washing OVER the road! Since Matthew in 2016, and Irma in 2017, the roadway was repaired, but the dunes still haven't been completely restored. I don't know what that would involve, or if that actually could be done.

To be honest, the road needs to be moved quite a few feet over, but that would require taking down most of the homes and small businesses that line the opposite side of the highway. It boggles my mind why they would put it so close to the dunes in the first place, or why they would erect homes so close that this eventuality couldn't be planned for, but they did. Short of putting in an enormous, artificial reef off the coast or something, I see no good outcome for the land, and quite a good one for the ocean! Meanwhile, it is still one of the prettiest coasts in Florida, even if you have to look over an ugly fence that looks like black trash bags!
