A Face a Mother DID Love
I brought Barrymore home when he was just a little kitten, probably not even six weeks old. Already about the cutest thing you ever saw, I thought he was going to be MY cat, but that would take some time. We didn't bond with each other for many years.
My mother was living when I brought my niece, Jessica and the tiny kitty that was living with his siblings and the mama kitty over to see her. I couldn't adopt him unless she approved. Mom was sleeping when we got there, so I knocked on her bedroom door, and told her she had a visitor. She was eager to see Jess, so we went in. I said, "Look what I have!", to which Mom replied, "GET IT OUT OF HERE!!! We don't need another CAT!" I put the kitten down on her bed and let him do his stuff.
Barrymore walked up to Mom, looked her right in the eye, and licked her arm. Mom said, "You ARE cute.....dammit." and that was that. The two formed an immediate bond, and Barrymore became a part of the family.
While Mom was alive, the cat wanted little to do with me. He loved her and she was his person. She didn't want to admit it, but she really loved him, too! It wasn't until Mom was dying that Barrymore somehow knew, and transferred his affection to me. He remained by her side until they threw him out of hospice. After she passed, he clung to me like an island in the storm.
Every night Barrymore greets me at the door. He follows me like a puppy dog. He isn't happy unless he's ON me, and he has most definitely made me his person. The difference is that now he is more social with other people, too. Everyone loves this sweet cat.
As Barrymore nears the end of his little life, I am bonding more and more with him. He is over 15 years old now, and has diabetes. He does well one month and not the next. I can tell he's weakening, and it's hard to watch. Having just lost Squeegee a few months ago, I'm not ready to lose him, too, but he's trying to hang in there and I'll do whatever I can for him in the meantime. He deserves it.
Now that I'M Barrymore's "Mommy", I have grown to love this face. Who wouldn't?
