A tossers party ? Mr D.Garrett of the ACT (no real mandate, backed by largely anonymous big business interests) party resigns today for dishonour and another farce ,Sept 2010, Wellington NZ . A personal failure not a system failure as the new first time MP in new possibly over-represented new political party there's double the maverick tendency.
All our smaller parties at present had their genesis within Labour who seem not to be able to brook dissent or difference within its ranks in the past few years; the Alliance, Greens ,Maori and 2-3 essentially one man band, parties.
Even this spawned the right wing Act party, with the petty greed, the mistrust of goverment, the lower the taxes party, dissolve the state, 'dog eat dog' style which arose out of a mid-1980s split within NZ Labour based on monetrist policy during the Reagan / Thatcher dire years.

This has nothing to do with MMP or a more democratic parliamentary system NZ adapted when tired of our two party system earlier.
The current government , despite a recession to blame is a right- centre one and has been called the Act-led National minority government (who more repesent big business ,monopolies and traders ).They got in as people "got tired" of the previously fiscally tighter government while still using some good, ?middle way, principles of the previous govt.National itself one of the two major parties nearly disppeared in the polls two elections or 8yrs ago. Both traditional Labour and National were forced to work with more diverse groupings and be more constructive for the country less oppostional; this could take some while to embed yet.
So we need not confuse unethical , unvetted ,small parties and their cronies with an attack on MMP or it's better variant of STV.The NZers are not so gullible yet there's a silly reactive media poll (see below) trying to create this divisive return to less democracy and representation. The NZ Green party by contrast have welded saner influence in a more considered, if a personally often un-rewarded way, thus far , in these times of peak oil etc.
1993 Number of MPs reaches 99; 1996 MMP electoral system is implemented, and there are 120 MPs. (NB:This increase in numbers was not actually required at the time)
MMP – Mixed member proportional representation. In this system some MPs are elected from local constituencies and others are elected from party lists. The number of MPs that a political party has in the House reflects the proportion of the votes that the party gained nationally in the election.
Westminster system – the form of parliamentary democracy established in Britain and adopted in other countries such as New Zealand. It is a centralised form of legislature characterised by the dominance of Cabinet government over Parliament and based on a small number of cohesive political parties (usually two) competing for power and alternating in office. A simple majority in the debating chamber determines who holds power. Since the adoption of MMP, New Zealand has, to some extent, moved away from what had been a strongly developed Westminster system. It was largely invented by the allies after WWII to impose greater democracy and ethics on post war Germany and Italy; so it adapts to the temperament of the national character.Much of western or nordic Europe and Israel have since adopted similar representation.
Normally there is only a 5% population voter threshold in NZ but if a minority party can hold an electoral seat thats becomes a slight anomaly for us , it takes only 3-5 bad apples to spoil the integrity of our newer electoral system.Opposition Labour Issues Spokesperson, Trevor Mallard, said Act had too much power for a party that won only 3.65 per cent of the party vote. They have taken a while to say this.
Do you still support MMP in the wake of Garrett's resignation?
