Brown's Store - Mazinaw Lake

Don Brown comments: "This photo show my Father and long time guest Major Gerow and Matt McLeod. It's also a good shot of the old hand lever "Supertest" gas pump.

"This original small building was probably constructed by Bryce Brown in the mid to late 1930s with Gene and Irv Brown moving in around 1941, living there, running the store and raising two children. The property was expropriated by the Highways Department around 1947 and Gene and Irv opened another store about five kilometres north, also on the east side of the highway.

There are numerous stores about this tiny store serving up the latest ice cream being delivered by the mail truck coming in dry ice packing from Foster's Dairy in Tweed. There were only ever three flavours - vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, but it certainly warmed the cockles of the hearts of the kids in the area. Another interesting aspect of this store/home was its water system. Irv had rigged a pulley down to the lake which was used to pull pails of water for household use, supplementing the pure spring drinking water they had to carry from the adjacent woods.
